SquashBusters was the first youth enrichment program of its kind – combining squash, academics, and community service.
Academic
enrichment is the second core component of the SquashBusters program.
The academic program for all three teams is a two-pronged approach to
educational enrichment. The first component is homework help—a straightforward
help session in which students receive assistance with their daily assignments
and projects. Staff and volunteer academic tutors stress organizational
and study skills, and insist upon excellence and attention to detail.
If students finish their homework early, they are encouraged to read or
study for upcoming tests.
The centerpiece of the SquashBusters academic curriculum is the skill-building session aimed at improved performance on the MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) or SAT tests, or at excellence in the college application process for high school seniors. With the help of MCAS and SAT prep materials from Summit Educational Group, SquashBusters staff and volunteers focus on boosting the math and English skills of all students. With all benchmark tests behind them, high school seniors focus on the college application process with the help of counseling from The Bottom Line, a non-profit organization that assists Boston Public School students plan their next steps after graduation.
