One of the three main components of the SquashBusters after-school regimen is the sport of squash. All SquashBusters students practice squash three days each week for a total of 4.5 hours of intensive training. While the players bring a range of skill levels to the court, after 7 years of instruction and competition all SquashBusters have improved significantly, are well-versed in the rules and strategy of the game, and are proficient squash competitors. SquashBusters’ squash program also includes a fitness regimen for all students that includes regular treadmill running, circuit training, and a daily stretching routine, all aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to three practices each week, SquashBusters play regularly in tournaments, leagues, summer camps, and matches against private schools across New England. Competition provides
opportunities to practice good sportsmanship, and acts as a benchmark for students to gauge their progress as squash players.  While it is traditionally considered an individual sport, SquashBusters cultivates a strong team dynamic through these regional competitions.

“The squash competition is hard, but even when I lose I learn a few different moves. Before, I think there was a really big gap between people. Now I don’t really see a gap. There are some people who are better off than me, but if I really try, I do not see much of a gap.”

Jessica Thompson
Team 1, current Northeastern University student

“The squash competition helps me understand what we’re aiming for. I learn from other players, and I leave the matches with a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses.I like the challenge of playing people who are better.”

Jennifer Amaya
Team 2, current Simmons College student
